I based this image on a photograph depicting a
Scottish myth. The myth stated that the laird
of the manor could only reach the chapel (which
existed at the end of the path through the trees)
by walking around the trees. He could never look
or walk directly down the path to the chapel.
Only after his death, could he be carried directly
through the trees to the chapel. I assumed that
these trees must have had a great psychological
and spiritual presence. For me, the image evokes
questions of life, death, and afterlife. But,
also the wonderful mysteries and unexpected joys
one finds in life’s journey. This pastel
inspired me to begin documentary work.
